David Lachapelle fue un avanzado alumno del gran Andy Warhol, al cual incluso retrató. Su estilo como no podía ser de otra manera bebe las aguas del Pop Art llevándolo pasos más adelante extremando el color y la saturación.
Lachapelle se hizo famoso mediante retratos de cantantes de grandes montajes y colorido,y la publicidad, gracias a la que no tardó en saltar al mundo de los videoclips, consiguiendo gran expectación como es el caso del video de Dirrty de Christina Aguilera, con el cual ella rompía la imagen de niña Disney y él daba rienda suelta a su imaginario, aportando conejos con cuerpos de gimnasio, travestis y mucha mucha suciedad sin perder el toque sexual.
Pero también supo dejar a un lado la temática polémica y hacer vídeos comprometidos y dramatizados como Everytime de Britney Spears (causando un gran revuelo su escena final) y The Voice Within con un espectacular plano secuencia que ocupa todo el vídeo
El mundo de la TV no tardó en llamar a su estudio para promocionar sus series con la estética y la originalidad del famoso fotográfo y director, famosas son sus promos de Lost y Desperate Housewives y sus carteles para Nip Tuck
Hizo una película llamada Rise que no tuvo mucho éxito y que no he podido visionar.
Tras probar la dirección cinematográfica, se pasó a crear montajes para giras de cantantes como Elton John y continuar coolaborando con revistas como Rolling Stones para hacer sus portadas, que nunca pasan desapercibidas.
